Gear racks are the most basic type of gear having straight-sided teeth that are parallel to the axis of rotation of a mating pinion gear. The rack and pinion mechanism is most commonly used to convert the rotational motion of a motor-driven pinion to the linear motion of the gear rack. The teeth of gear racks are either straight like that of spur gears or angled like helical gears.
